Subaru of America has a new recall for the Impreza compact car. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued a recall of 2017-2019 Subaru Impreza models with faulty headlights. Here is what owners need to know.

How many Impreza models are affected? The NHTSA says the potential number of Impreza models affected is 188,397. Both the 2017-2019 Impreza sedan and Impreza hatchback models are included in the new recall issued this month.

What is the problem? The left and right side reflex reflector and left side low beam reflector may inadequately reflect light. The NHTSA says, "As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 108, Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment."

What is the safety issue?

According to the NHTSA, reflectors that do not provide adequate illumination reduce the driver's ability to see and increase the risk of a crash.

The 2017-2019 Impreza model year vehicles were included in another recall in 2021. Subaru needed to check and update the engine control module (ECM) programming and replace all ignition coils. The ignition coils could, over time, degrade and cause starting or stalling issues.

Subaru of America began the 2017-2019 Impreza recall on May 14, 2021. If your car has not been in for repair, Subaru retailers will check and update the engine control module (ECM) programming and replace all ignition coils if necessary free of charge.

What should owners do for the new headlight recall?

Subaru retailers will replace the front headlamp assemblies free of charge. 2017-2019 Subaru Impreza owners can use this VIN lookup tool to see if your vehicle is included in the new recall.

Subaru's number for this recall is WRG-22. Owners may contact Subaru's customer service at 1-844-373-6614. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed on October 11, 2022
