Two weeks into the high school football season, only three area teams remain undefeated on the year heading into Week 3, while three others remain in search of their first win.

D.H. Conley, Greene Central and John Paul II all look to move to 3-0 this week. On the other side, South Central, Farmville Central and Ayden-Grifton are all looking to avoid a third consecutive loss to start the year.

With the Labor Day weekend imminent, a few teams opted to take the field tonight rather than Friday.

Here is a closer look at this week’s action:

The Rampants host Northeastern in a battle of teams looking to avoid dropping back-to-back games, as both are coming off tough road losses in Week 2.

J.H. Rose fell 43-28 at Cleveland, while the Eagles suffered a 31-28 loss at the hands of Rocky Mount.

While the Rampants have relied more on their air attack this season, the visitors will bring a more run-heavy offense.

Rose quarterback Will Taylor has thrown for 422 yards and six touchdowns, with half of those scores and 206 of the yards going to wideout Kenderius Geddis.

Tyselle Spencer leads Northeastern’s ground game with 264 yards and four touchdowns this season.

The teams have met twice in the past three seasons, as Northeastern has won both matchups, including a 50-28 triumph last fall.

Greene Central is looking to start 3-0 for the first time since 2015 when it opened the year with eight consecutive wins on the way to a 10-2 season.

On the other side, the Bruins are looking to avoid an 0-3 start to the year.

The Rams have found success offensively both in the air and on the ground this season, as Justice Debro has totaled 336 rushing yards in two games, while Wilkes Thomas has 310 yards through the air.

Beddingfield is a more run-style offense, with 407 of its 485 yards coming on the ground, led by Malik Woodard’s 191.

The teams are doing battle for the second consecutive season, as last year it was the Rams coming out on top 38-6.

Catholic (1-0) at John Paul II (2-0)Despite all of the success the Saints have had the past two seasons, they have a chance Thursday to secure their first-ever 3-0 start to a season when they host Catholic at 6 p.m.

Catholic (Virginia Beach, Va.) makes its second trip to North Carolina in as many weeks after securing a 20-11 win over First Flight in its first game of the season last Friday.

The Saints continue to power their way to wins on the ground, as they have totaled 737 yards and 11 rushing touchdowns in two games.

Rion Roseborough leads JP2’s deep running back core with 332 yards and four scores on 24 totes.

A trio of big first-half plays lifted the Crusaders to the win over the Nighthawks, as they scored on plays of 70, 69 and 25 yards.

Cleveland (2-0) at D.H. Conley (2-0)Despite all the strong teams the Vikings have had in recent years, this year’s squad has a chance to start the season 3-0, something a Conley team has not done since 2012.

D.H. Conley has relied on a balanced offense and a stout defense so far this season, having allowed just 10 points in two games.

Quarterback Jason Herring has found success connecting with Isaiah Crumpler and Cooper Marcum, while Yah Dade-El is coming off a big game on the ground in a 35-0 Week 2 win over Cary.

In the opening week, Cleveland defeated the Imps 55-12, before topping Conley’s crosstown foe J.H. Rose last week at home.

Quarterback Jackson Byrd is off to a hot start for the Rams, surpassing 500 yards on the young season with nine touchdown passes.

The teams are meeting for the first time since the 2018 state playoffs, a game that saw the Rams advance with a narrow 40-35 victory.

Coming off a pair of close losses, South Central is still in search of its first win of the season as it travels to Washington.

The Falcons have dropped their first two games to Kinston and West Craven by a combined 11 points, while the Pam Pack is looking to bounce back from a close loss of its own last week at the hands of Northampton County.

Quarterback Lucas Kuberacki has found success for South Central with both his arm and his legs at times, but five interceptions along with three fumbles for the team have proved costly early in the year.

Defensively, the Falcons will look to slow down Washington’s ground-and-pound attack, which has led it to scoring 30.5 points per game this year.

North Pitt and Roanoke Rapids are set to do battle Friday at 7:30 p.m. after having flipped results in their first two games, as the Panthers are coming off a dominant win on the heels of a low-scoring Week 1 loss.

Last week, the Yellowjackets came up on the wrong end of a defensive struggle after they opened the season with a commanding win.

After struggling to get in a groove in the opener, the Panthers’ air attack exploded last week, as both Devin Crumble and Famous Wilson threw three touchdown passes, combining for 382 yards in a triumph over Manteo.

Roanoke Rapids has a much different offensive approach, as it has three running backs who have eclipsed the 100-yard mark so far this season.

While the Jaguars and Patriots both enter Friday’s matchup coming off a loss, the margin of defeat was much different.

Farmville Central is looking to bounce back from a 30-29 loss to North Lenoir as it still searches for its first win of the year, while West Carteret is coming off a 61-0 thumping by Havelock.

The Patriots’ offensive struggle last week was highlighted by six interceptions, as the Rams finished with a pair of pick-sixes.

For the Jags, Brandon Knight has been the bright spot offensively, having rushed for 283 yards and three touchdowns in their first two games.

The Chargers will hit the road for the first time this season in search of their first win after dropping back-to-back home games.

Kinston opened with a narrow home win over South Central before falling on the road to Greene Central last week.

The Vikings have won two straight games in the series, including a 40-6 victory last fall.
