The medical expert appeared on Lorraine to share advice on how people can cope in the sweltering temperatures

Dr Hilary Jones has shared a trick people can use to get a good night's sleep during the heatwave.

The medical expert appeared on today's edition of Lorraine as the Met Office issued an amber warning for extreme heat. The alert will be in force for four days from Thursday, August 11, to 11pm on Sunday, August 14.

Temperatures across Liverpool are expected to reach highs of 29C and people will be searching for ways to cope in the sweltering conditions. Tuesday's episode of Lorraine was hosted by Ranvir Singh and Dr Hilary told the broadcaster how people can stay cool at night.

He cited a hack that has gone viral on TikTok which uses a roll of tin foil or kitchen foil priced from 68p in shops such as Asda, Tesco and Sainsbury's. He added: "All you need are two inexpensive ingredients.

"A cheap roll of aluminium foil and a spray bottle of soapy water. You go over to your window and then you just put the foil on the window with the shiny bit facing outwards.

"What that does is it works like a huge sun reflector or a budget blackout blind. If you're in the Mediterranean and you see cars parked by the sea they all have sun reflectors on the windscreens.

"This is the same principle. It's just reflecting the heat back. 20 to 30 percent of the heat in your bedroom comes from the sun coming through the window."
